St. Barthomew's, Longnor

The Church

Dates from the late 1770s, though there has been a church here from the Middle Ages, St. Bartholomew’s Church contains a notable 12th century font and 18th century painted boards of the ten commandments and the Lord’s Prayer and the Royal Arms. In the churchyard can be found the tomb of William Billinge, who took part in the capture of Gibraltar, fought under Marlborough and eventually died in 1791, allegedly at the age of 112. The church and the attractive village centre were used in the filming of the later series of I.T.V.s “Peak Practice”
Parish Records
Historic records of St Bartholomew, Longnor have been deposited at Staffordshire Record Office, where they are available for consultation by the public. These include the parish registers of baptisms 1691-1892, marriages 1691-1837 and burials 1691-1883.

A catalogue of these records is available in "Gateway to the Past" (http://www.archives.staffordshire.gov.uk) - the online catalogue of the Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent Archive Service. The Archive Service's website (http://www.staffordshire.gov.uk/archives) provides further information on planning a visit to the office to consult records, should you wish to do so.
