The Church
The mother church of the Staffordshire Moorlands contains important fragments of Anglo-Saxon sculpture from the late 8th or 9th centuries, probably by craftsmen from nearby Bakewell (Derbys.) an important centre of religious sculpture at the period.
The present building is mainly 12th-14th cent. with 17th cent. furnishings. Charles Cotton, the friend of Izaak Walton, author of The Complete Angler , lived at Beresford Hall nearby and his canopied family pew is still to be seen in the church, which Walton often visited. The parish originally covered Quarnford and Warslow as well as the present parish.
